New Avenue Foundation, a Delaware county based nonprofit that promotes and supports employment, stimulating activities, skill-building classes, and creative housing for people with disabilities, is actively seeking new board members to help move the organization forward to accomplish its mission. The mission of the organization is to create more meaningful lives for people with disabilities and autism, and to reduce dependence on the government programs that now support these individuals.
Co-Founder and Treasurer of New Avenue Foundation, Jim Wurster, stated, "We are looking for parents or self-advocates because they know what is needed. We don’t have any key skills that we are looking for although we could use help in finances, fund-raising, and outreach. It’s important that we have a good representation of both Moms and Dads on our Board, as well as Self-advocates. Recent graduates would also be important to our Board as they will provide a different perspective than we parents. Teachers, social workers and those who work with our loved ones are also important to help balance out our Board."
Wurster further stated they would like Board members interested in helping financially and to contribute to sharing expenses, however, that it is more important new members be enthusiastic and committed to the organization's mission. He also said that there is no specific deadline or time frame, but they would like to complete their Board as soon as possible.
