The Honors College at Millersville University and The Pennsylvania History Coalition Honoring People with Disability, will host the second Statewide Disability History Conference, at Millersville University, March 28, 2016.
The conference will acknowledge people with disability in the context of a remarkable history that Pennsylvanians share and make, and will focus on an array of stakeholders representing people with disability, their families, direct support professionals, program and system administrators, historical centers like museums and archives, higher education, social research, and other community organizations and initiatives.
Opening keynote speaker for the event will be Eric Rosenthal, J.D., founder and executive director of Disability Rights International (DRI), Drinan Professor of Human Rights at Georgetown University, noted activist, and author. Dr. Rosenthal’s career has brought world attention to the rights of people with disability, exposing a vacuum in advocacy that is being filled with international movements.
The conference will premiere of a full-length documentary, The Long Journey Home, produced by Witf Public Media Center, in central Pennsylvania. The film depicts perspectives on the course of treatment of people with intellectual disability in the state, from the early 19th century to the present day. It is one of the first films of this nature; a landmark in public education that the coalition hopes to build upon.
Additional activities include a community forum on historic initiatives and issues of interest will be led by Dr. Thomas Neuville, Associate Professor of Educational Foundations, Millersville University and Commonwealth Institute founder, and a post-conference viewing of the recently restored Somebody Touched Me, narrated by the actor Henry Fonda, with discussion facilitated Dr. Jim Conroy and Jean Searle of the Pennhurst Memorial and Preservation Alliance.
There is no cost to attend the conference and free and accessible parking is available. Accommodations will be provided but must be requested in advance.
